Pregnancy is an incredible time in your life, a Maternity photoshoot is a fantastic way to capture this. Here are a few things to consider to make your dream maternity photography shoot extra special.

1 Location. If you have a location that is very special, lets incorporate. This couple shared many special memories on the pier at White Rock beach, so it was a must have location. It was very fitting that for all previous occasions, it was pouring rain and this day was no exception! They did a terrific job of huddling under the umbrella while I set up, then tossing the umbrella out of the frame as I took the photo. While the rain was not ideal, it gave some nice reflections and added to the memories.

2. Special clothing. Maybe you have an heirloom dress passed down generations, or your wedding veil, anything of importance. Escaping the rain back to this couples home for indoor photos, we creatively used part of her wedding Sari. First the belly shots then wrapped the sari around her for some beautiful backlight portraits of the stunning mom-to-be.

3 Props and accessories can add interest to your photographs. This mom brought the flower crown. The flowers are removable, she added the flowers to a belt over her sweater to add cute definition to her belly bump.  The tulle skirt is in my wardrobe collection for photoshoots.  The skirt played up the romantic maternity photos.

4. An adventurous spirt goes a long way! This mom-to-be saw milk bath photos on Pinterest and mentioned it during our consultation. I was so excited to try! This talented mommy to-be made  the lace wrap for the bath photos. She has inspired me to make a few to keep on hand for future maternity shoots. We both love how they turned out. (Mom to be is wearing bottoms, they are edited out of the photograph and/or covered with the opaque milky water.)

Above all the consultation with your professional photographer is a great time to share ideas, and collaborate to make your custom maternity photoshoot memorable.

Jericho Beach is one of the best locations in Vancouver for family photography. It has great options for diverse backgrounds without travelling far.  We had great enough weather for shorts and dresses. Early mornings and evenings are best for magical light. We chose a great evening mid September. We started an hour and 15 min before sunset. We started with the duck pond location. The light was still high enough to shine over the trees giving a painterly effect over the water.  The kids has so much fun watching the ducks splash around.

Then we strolled over to the beach for more fun. While the kids were playing catch with seagulls ,we were able to get a few photos of mom and dad. It is so important to get a photograph of mom and dad as this love is the foundation of the entire family. And yes, the seagulls were playing catch! The kids had so much fun playing on the beach, it was a great opportunity to get candid photographs of the children.

Beautiful British Columbia is a fantastic place to live for outdoor enthusiasts withs kids.  September usually has some great weather, this is a perfect time to grab a camera, your family and head outdoors.

These are some of my family’s favourite hikes that are easy for the kids, (mine are now 5 and almost 8) while boasting beautiful scenery for photography. (click on the link for more info on the trails and how to get there)

  1. Lighthouse Park. This beautiful park is in West Vancouver. We went last August and packed a picnic dinner, hiking on the rocks slightly before sunset for fantastic photography light. The trails through the first growth Douglas firs are amazing. The main trails can accommodate strollers. I love the setting of the rocks plunging into the ocean.  Our girls explored around the shore for hours.
  2. Mystery Lake Hike on Mount Seymour. This trail is 3Km round trip. We really took our time going up. We detoured just before the pond part way up, scrambled up some rocks to find great views of Vancouver and beyond. The trail is not stroller friendly, and may be tough for 2-3 year olds. My girls aged 5 and 7.5 had an easy time running up the trail. The crisp cold lake at the top is beautiful. Little rock islands are fun picnic locations. Lots of Newts around the lake are another fun feature for kids to check out. I am enjoying playing around with free lensing, love changing the plane of focus to get different looks to each photo without a tilt shift lens.
  3. Golden Ears Park, Lower Falls Trail This trail is around 5 km round trip. It is a nice wide stroller friendly gravel path. Perfect for little ones who like to walk for a bit, but get tired quickly. I really can’t get enough of the old growth stumps, those giant trees are amazing. The Banana slugs were a hit, my girls tried to rescue them, even putting blankets over them (leaves). The waterfall at the end is a beautiful sight. Hope your family enjoys time together on some of these great short hikes!

It is  Located off 128 St.,  South of Marine drive. It has big mature trees, a labyrinth, and incredible lookout over the bluffs of Ocean Park. The day of this shoot poured rain, We were a bit nervous and constantly checking weather apps. We lucked out, with the skies opening up for an incredible sunset.

Playful children’s Portraits at Lighthouse Park, West Vancouver BC

September 3rd, 2015

I love being out in nature, it is so tranquil. This last week was fairly stressful as we packed up photographs and some special furniture from my in-laws summer home in Christina Lake. I love being out in nature, it is so tranquil. This last week was fairly stressful as we packed up photographs and some special furniture from my in-laws summer home in Christina Lake. The US Stickpin fire was continuing North, and strong winds were predicted to bring embers our way. The southern Areas of Grand Forks and Christina Lake were under evacuation alert. It is a summer home, but we put years of our hearts into building it with my in-laws. It is my family’s favourite place. We all had pits in our stomach of the unknown and uneasiness over the possibility of having it lost…

As a fun family evening, I dragged my family out to Lighthouse park in West Vancouver BC for a picnic dinner and photos. It was such a wonderful distraction! There are many incredible trails to hike, and all easy enough for little kids! A camera in hand, and being in the salty ocean fresh air carried away all worries. I was completely lost in the beauty and wonder of being amongst the old growth Douglas Firs and Cedars.

The kids played on the rocks exploring for hours as I took some candid and some back to school photos of them!

Yes we did have a wardrobe change to include the new back to school dresses! You may have noticed I have quite the girly girls, but am so glad they love the outdoors as much as my husband and I do! The hiking in dresses adds and extras cuteness to the photos! (They dressed themselves, and were excited to change into dressy shoes for some photos.) I would highly recommend a family trip to Lighthouse Park for a fun exploration or family Photos or both, the scenery is amazing!

Pregnancy is such a miraculous  and exciting time in ones life that many want to capture with photography. The best time to capture your adorable belly  is around 28-32 weeks of pregnancy.  The baby bump is getting nice and round, but you are not yet at the incredibly uncomfortable stage. For expectant moms carrying twins, earlier is best as you may grow more quickly than with a single pregnancy. I would suggest contacting a photographer early in your pregnancy. Most professional photographers have a consultation to get to know you and what you are looking for in your maternity photographs.  This is a great opportunity for the photographer to help you gauge the best timing for your session based on your growth and any possible health concerns. Closer to the end of pregnancy after 34 weeks mots of moms can start retaining more water and get very uncomfortable!! Those babies love digging feet up under moms ribs, this uncomfort will show in the photos. This beautiful mommy had her session at 32 weeks.

Another thing to consider in your maternity session are some family photographs. This baby will be coming into a family, so however your family is composed, include them!

In this shoot I brought a little treat for the toddler to have while sitting beside me. I was then able to get some great shots of mom and dad. It is the love for each other that created this baby and family, lets capture it!! How special for the children to have loving photographs of their parents to look back upon when older. If you have questions about maternity photography, contact me, and I would be happy to give you more information!

This family loves to snowboard together, it is a passion and provides great family time! I love that each family member had on a shirt from one of the mountains they board at. What a creative and memorable way to capture the essence of their family. Love it! The family also spends lots of time at local skate parks. I was thrilled for the boys to bring their skateboards, we all had fun. This what custom photography is about, capturing the unique style of your family.

Today is the long awaited first day of school for the BC public school students! I love having my kids home, but by the end of a long summer, they need some time to themselves! With only one hour of classes, you have time to take some back to school photos! Here are some different options for you to try!

Painting backdrop! I made one backdrop from old pictures/ paintings and crafts.  (the further away your child stands from the wall, the more blurry the background will be. I included a wide shot to show how I use a big white board reflector for fill light)

Go play out side.! I love photos in Nature with the beautiful grasses for extra texture. I added a chalkboard insert to one of my custom handcrafted photo frames to write the school date. We also brought some books without covers to have vintage feel.

My oldest, is so great with her sister, she was styling,  fixing her hair, and brought her flowers!

Hand drawn back drop! I am lucky to have large rolls of seamless backdrop paper. I borrowed the kids chalk and drew out this scene. You can duct tape poster paper together to make a large backdrop and draw on it. Not my usual style, but another fun option. I like the Black and white, it reminds me of the background in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty!

Art Easel Info photo. This one is nice and easy, I wrote a couple things we would like to remember in the future. It is fun and easy, most people have these at home already!
